Filament, printers and the parts you make
AMS and spools

Will this filament work in your AMS?

Check the spool as well as the plastic. The right material can still be awkward to use if the reel or refill does not suit your feeder.

Start with the package

Look at the actual spool diameter, width and construction, then compare them with the instructions for your AMS model. Check for any adapter requirement. A refill needs a suitable reusable spool; a lower price is not much help if you still have to buy one.

Do not assume every reel from a brand uses the same dimensions. Regional packs, refills and different product ranges can differ.

RFID is a convenience feature

Automatic recognition can save setup time, but an RFID label is not proof of compatibility with every feeder. For third-party filament, be prepared to enter the correct material and colour manually and select a suitable profile. The instructions for the particular printer and feeder take precedence.

Project filament 1 can use AMS slot 2

The filament number in a Bambu Studio project is not necessarily the physical AMS slot. In the final send window, check the mapping from the project’s filament to the loaded reel. A selection on the Device screen is not a substitute for that check.

Our recorded Copymaster print used project filament 1 mapped to physical slot 2. The mapping needed correcting before the intended reel was used. That was a setup issue, not a filament defect.

What a useful handling review should tell you

Did the reel fit? Was an adapter or respooling needed? Did it load and feed through the observed print without an interruption? Those answers are more helpful than a blanket “AMS compatible” label.
