Identify the coating
“Build plate” covers several surfaces with different care instructions. Check the exact product before choosing a cleaner, abrasive or adhesive. A routine intended for one coating may be unsuitable for another.
Check the simple things
Let the plate cool before handling it. Inspect the print area, check that the correct plate is selected in the slicer and follow the maker’s cleaning and drying instructions. Handle the edges rather than putting fingerprints back where the first layer will go.
Do not jump to a stronger solvent just because a print lifted. The selected temperature, first-layer settings and surface condition all deserve checking.
How to compare two cleaning routines
Use a small, consistent first-layer coupon on the same coating. Record the cleaning product, cloth, method, drying and print settings. Photograph the first layer and any lifted edges before removing it.
The order matters: the first cleaning treatment changes the surface for the next one. A single print after each treatment is an observation, not proof that a method always works better. Avoid treating a used plate and a new plate as identical starting points.
When a new plate may be the answer
Cleaning cannot reverse every worn or damaged coating. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance on damage and replacement. If you are choosing a different surface, compare its removal and cleaning requirements as well as its first-layer grip in our build-plate guide.
